The FBI Didn’t Break Signal’s Encryption — They Pulled Messages From the iOS Notification Database

Additional coverage:

- Digital Trends — The FBI just cracked open Signal texts on an iPhone. Here’s how to lock yours down
- Security Affairs — iPhone forensics expose Signal messages after app removal in U.S. case
- Leaf&Core — Notifications Cracked a Signal History, Here’s How to Protect Yourself
The Thirty-Second Fix — Do This Now
Fix 1 — Inside Signal itself: Open Signal → Settings → Notifications → Notification Content → Select “No Name or Content”
Fix 2 — iOS system-wide: Settings → Notifications → Show Previews → “Never” (or at minimum “When Unlocked”)
Critical caveat: These settings only protect you going forward. You cannot currently clear the existing notification database on iOS. Whatever has already been stored there from the last 30 days is there until iOS purges it naturally. If you haven’t had these settings enabled, assume up to a month of Signal message previews are sitting on your device right now.
Bonus for the security-conscious:
- Consider disabling Signal notifications entirely and checking the app manually.
- GrapheneOS does not use Apple’s push notification infrastructure — and gives you far more control over what gets stored and where. Yet another reason to consider it.
- Physical security of the device still matters — use a strong passcode, disable biometric unlock when crossing borders.

I do support reform that requires a probable cause warrant before the FBI can search Section 702 data for information about Americans. And I do support closing the data broker loophole. Thank you.”
